UC Regents will be doing a review of the other University Chancellors about raising UC Chancellor Compensation to make it more competitive in this world market. This is headed by Regent Varner, who says that they do way too much work for the amount that they get compensated, Regent Lansing (Chair of the Board) Agrees that we need to re-look at how we preserve the quality of education and having competitive compensation for Chancellors is important.

New Meeting Structure

Happy Summer Banana Slugs!

The SUA officers have been hard at work in preparation for the fantastic year that awaits. As a part of this process, we have developed a new meeting structure that should make our progress, as the SUA, moreefficient and inclusive. Beginning this academic year, SUA General Body meetings will occur every other week from 6-9pm in the Cervantes and Velasquez Baytree Conference Room. On the alternate weeks, we will break up into our committees (RSO Funding Committee, Diversity Commission, Student Academic Senate, Lobby Corps, Student Power, and Outreach/Student Life) for an hour each, also located in the Baytree Conference rooms. This gives more people, especially those outside SUA Reps., to participate in our committees and ensures committees get adequate time to organize and meet. We’re going back to grassroots, everyone! The link below lays out the specific meeting dates, times, and locations for the entire year. See you on Sept. 27th, if not for our SUA Open House on Sept. 18th.

Know Your Measures!

Measure 47: Student Government Fee Amendment

-$1.50 per quarter in tuition fees to University of California Student Association (UCSA) and Return to Aid (RTA).

-UCSA is the source of UC statewide conferences which engage students in leadership development and bringing students from all UC campuses together to lobby for student issues.

-The designation RTA goes toward student financial aid.

-This measure will boost UCSA’s ability to advocate for students and enable more students to participate in conferences and events.

Measure 48: Universal Access Fee

-$5.00 per quarter in tuition fees to increase access to facilities and student programs on campus, especially for students with disabilities.

-Expands transportation opportunities and hires more sign-language interpreters

Measure 49: Cultural Arts and Diversity fee

-$5.00 per quarter in tuition fees to increase access to facilities and student programs on campus, especially for students with disabilities.

-Expands transportation opportunities and hires more sign-language interpreters

Measure 49: Cultural Arts and Diversity fee

-$5.25 per quarter tuition fees to Cultural Arts and Diversity (CAD)

-CAD promotes: Quarry plaza special events, Rainbow Theater, African American Theater Arts Troupe, and classes offered through the Theater Arts departmentand Stevenson College

-This measure will keep these performing groups and performances from disappearing due the recent cuts in funding from the university.

-This measure will also go towards increasing campus-wide exposure to and awareness of diverse cultures through student productions, educating UCSC students about cultural arts through workshops, better equipment, and creating a board of directors for CAD to maintain accessibility and accountability to student needs.

Measure 50: Measure to Increase Student Voice

-No new fee; only a change to make the existing fee more effective.

-That change is: to change the language of current Measure 13 so that the school prioritizes student media more and does not limit funding only to facilities and equipment but to “meet the needs of all student media;” for example, workshops, training, and advising so that student media can more effectively and accurately inform the campus and community.

-With the exponential growth student media has seen since 2005, it is important for the measure to be updated so that it can accommodate all the new student media orgs, including: SCTV, City on a Hill Press, TWANAS, Fish Rap Live!, Eyecandy, Leviathan, Disorientation Guide, KZSC 88.1 FM, Moxie Prodction Group, Film Production Coalition, On the Spot, Banana Slug News, Rainbow TV, Border Stompers, Gaia/Environmental Media Project, Alay, Matchbox Magazine, and Chinquapin.

-It will increase the visibility of the student voice by providing media outlets and updating old ones, creating a more democratic student voice.

-It will help reestablish SCTV on Channel 28.

Measure 51: Measure 16 Amendment

-$0.60 to Student Committee on Committees (SCOC) enable the Student Committee on Committees (SCOC) to serve the student body by placing students on committees, and to further ensure financial efficiency, shall the undergraduate students suspend the collection of Measure 16 for a period of two academic years.
